There is a story burning in my soul.
A story about nightmares coming true.
A story about a carefully crafted life that crumbled.
A story about thick masks that ripped away.
A story about a mind, body & spirit suffering darkest fear & pain.
A story about a family asking why…

I know the story well, because it’s my story. And it’s time to send it out into the world to you.

Burnout and breakdown no longer define me. The twisted weeds that strangled me are thinned. The light is shining and joy is spilling over in a way I never knew and never thought was possible.

The journey was messy and scary.  It was also very good.  I was stripped down, yet I was reborn. I learned so many life changing truths. And I want you to know them, too. I want you to see yourself in the warning signs, in the pit of despair, and in the healing.

Join me on this page in October as I share daily doses of a story that I hope will change your life as it has changed mine.

Be Still and Be Well.
Laura

The Hero wants to be a loving source of help and hope in your story, too. He is so much more than what you probably believe. Get to know Him. Just give it a try. Read the book of John from the Bible. If you don’t have a Bible, Google “The book of John.” There’s no judgement there from Jesus. Only love and grace and life. What you find will surprise you. It surprises me every time. #SeekingTheStill ift.tt/2tStXpf ... See MoreSee Less

Here’s my secret sauce for when you’re nervous. I use this as a pre-event ritual prior to speaking, but you can do this before the first day of school or a difficult conversation. It works!
1) Shake The Jitters Out. Anticipation and stress cause a surge of adrenaline that you don’t need in your body. So, dance, shake, walk, bounce for a few minutes to burn it off.
2) Center. Now that the energy is burned, focus your thoughts. I close my eyes, pray, and let my mind be still.
3) Power Pose. Remind yourself that you're simply a vessel and that the God of the Universe is the one working in you. Let that truth sink in. Breath deep, then it’s time to rock and roll! You’ll be calm, centered, and ready to tackle what’s ahead. #SeekingTheStill ift.tt/2siRYpS

I moved a lot as a child, but the most difficult time was in the middle of 8th grade. That first year of high school was rough. I never once felt comfortable in my own skin. I was a shy, smart girl who wanted to be the outgoing, fun girl. I remember one day as a freshman, I curled my long blonde hair and was feeling unusually good about myself. Walking up the stairs to the lockers, my foot hooked on the top step and I stumbled (in painfully slow motion) with books and notebooks scattering. I can STILL feel the horror of blood rushing to my head and tears watering in my eyes. It doesn’t matter how old we get, we’re all still afraid of stumbling. The fall does not define you, but how you rise most certainly will. #SeekingTheStill ift.tt/2rzniyJ ... See MoreSee Less

I love personality tests! My favorite is the Gallup Strengthsfinder. One of my top five strengths is RESPONSIBILITY, which is both a blessing and a curse. If I commit to something, you can bet your bottom dollar that I will do it. And people notice this particular strength and like to capitalize on it 🙂 It’s partially what led to my breakdown a few years ago. So, since I don’t want to let go of a STRENGTH, I’ve had to learn how to minimize the amount of commitments I make. I don’t say “Yes” to everything asked of me any more. In fact, I try not to say “Yes” unless I can’t think of a good reason to say “No.” When it comes to big commitments, more Nos than Yeses, my friends. This is one of the basic principles in #SeekingTheStill ift.tt/2tlgbuV ... See MoreSee Less

Your life is your witness. In every valley, every shadow, He is faithful. Answers come, not as you ask, but they do come. The darkest days are the sacred ground where He meets you. In a million different ways He weaves the tapestry of your life. Golden threads crisscross and lives intersect. He provides. He saves. He restores. Time proves His power and might. Your puny plans hold no weight against His perfect will. #SeekingTheStill ift.tt/2swFhdF ... See MoreSee Less

You can't do it in your own strength. It only works in the loving hands of your Creator. Share what you’ve learned and the mistakes you’ve made. Be honest. Raw. Real. Take off your mask. Because real is the only way to help others, to tell your story, to let love win. #SeekingTheStill ift.tt/2s2M2Bc ... See MoreSee Less

Every story must have a hero, and you’ve been trying to make that hero you. You are NOT the Hero of your story, darling. No, you are the wanderer, the broken. You are UNABLE to work your way out of your life’s web of hurt, pain, lies and heartache. It’s true. You are the one who needs to be rescued. Oh, how your soul longs to be rescued! #SeekingTheStill ift.tt/2reKvL6 ... See MoreSee Less

We met the very first day of work in New Employee Orientation at our first “real” job out of college. I sometimes think about the choices that led to the corporate meeting room on December 28, 1998. Justin and I had other job offers, different directions we could have gone. I start to panic when I think about not having met him. But then I remember that I’m not (and have never been) the One in control. You'll NEVER know the answers to what-ifs and could-have-beens. And it doesn’t matter because God’s plan is always good. So don't worry so much about what will happen. Just do the next right thing in love. That will always lead to the destiny that was yours from the very beginning. #SeekingTheStill ift.tt/2sOfNWl ... Do you feel like you’re living a mile wide and an inch deep? I’m willing to bet you are frequently overcommitted, emotionally uninvested, and multi-tasking your way through this beautiful life. Meanwhile, God is putting people in your path to know...really know. He’s giving you His Word to sink way down. Not just in your mind, but deep within your heart and straight to your soul. Let go of some things, so you can go deep where it matters! #SeekingTheStill ift.tt/2snFgIS ... See MoreSee Less

You can’t recall the last time you belly laughed. You go outside, but can’t remember how the sun felt on your skin. You say, “What?” a lot when people are talking to you. If you had an unexpected free hour of time, you don’t know what you’d do to bring yourself joy. Ask me how I know... #seekingthestill ift.tt/2rS4pZo ... See MoreSee Less

A manifesto has been bubbling within me for awhile now. It’s a declaration of who I am and what I believe. For so long, I buffered myself with the thoughts and perspectives of other people. Life felt safer that way. Then life as I knew it fell away, and NOW I have a lot to say! So much of this manifesto also applies to you. We’re both Messy Miracles, after all! The Seeking The Still Manifesto e-book is almost ready. If you’d like to read it, I’ll give you a copy. Coming soon in June 2017. #SeekingTheStill ift.tt/2s6b7xP

Birds are my spirit animal. There is a long story about this (note to self for a blog post idea). Essentially, at pivotal moments in my life, birds show up in the craziest ways. I’ve come to expect it and treasure those fleeting gifts. Ironically, I don’t even know that much about birds except that they float on Divine wind. And that’s quite enough for me! Do you have a “spirit animal?” If not, pay attention! There is always more going on than what you initially see.
